"The U.S. uses most of its oil for transportation. We can limit U.S. demand for oil by requiring automakers to use the technology that already exists to improve fuel economy - technology that the automakers refuse to bring into the market despite societal demand."
~ Sherwood Boehlert (R-NY), U.S. Congressman, 1983-2007
Sustain Winona: Transportation
Our Vision
A community with a multi-faceted transportation system that provides alternatives to driving alone. Reducing the number of vehicles on the road cuts vehicle emissions and noise, decreases congestion, extends the life cycle of existing roadways, promotes a healthier community, reduces need for parking lots, and saves money spent on fuel.

Walking
Walk to school, walk to work, walk to errands, walk for your health! Most Americans would like to walk more, and studies show it will help us live longer and maintain a more positive outlook.
Much of Winona is on flat land, so walking to many commercial areas can be done safely. Crossing Highway 61 is a hazard that needs to be addressed in the future, as is pedestrian access to services from the more suburban style neighborhoods.
Popular recreational walks in Winona include the Lake Paths, Prairie Island Nature Trail, the trails at St. Mary's University, Aghaming Park trails, and the more challenging Bluffside Trails, beginning at Holzinger's Lodge, and the Garvin Heights Trail.

Bicycling
In a region known for great cycling there are many reasons to consider biking as a transportation option. We will be working with employers and retail businesses to provide bicycle racks, lockers, showers and other conveniences to make bicycling easier. A bicycle committee is also working to provide trail extensions providing bike access to surrounding communities and other regional trails.

They include the Levee Park-Prairie Island Loop, which includes a connection to La Canne Park in Goodview; the Lake Winona Path; the Highway 43-Gilmore Valley Loop; the Garvin Heights Challenge; and the Holzinger Lodge Mountain bike trails.

Carpooling
New! Join the Winona Area Carpool Club
Here's where we get to stop going alone. Ridesharing – either in a carpool or vanpool – can be a great way to get where you need to go whether it is work or getting the kids to soccer practice.
Sustain Winona member Martha Greenwald has created the Winona Area Carpool Club, hosted by Google groups. Contact her for more information, or to get invited to join the club. Otherwise, finding someone to share a ride with is easy and convenient using two major websites that have attracted a number of Minnesota users with their free services - Erideshare and Carpoolworld. Consider sharing rides for the daily commute, or, if you are going to Minneapolis or Chicago, and have room for an extra person, why don't you post a ride on one of the websites?
You can also check out the rideshare board at Bluff Country Co-op, where individuals who share the cooperative vision can post or look for rides. We are grateful to Winona's Geospatial Services, Inc for preparing the Rideshare Map which you can see at the Co-op.
Volunteers are needed to serve as drivers through the SEMCAC Volunteer Driver Program. Volunteer drivers are men and women willing to share their time and vehicle to help meet the transportation needs of their community. They provide transportation for local trips and long distance trips to Rochester, La Crosse and Minneapolis. Learnmore at the SEMCAC website.
